It is a New Year. What Will You Do Differently?

This is the way to start the day!

I must admit I am not a fan of New Year's resolutions. It is not that I do not believe in resolutions on their own (my business is named 'Resolved Self!'), but they put unneeded pressure on the individual to fulfill lofty goals in a narrow time frame. I would say two of the most common are "lose weight" or "start exercising." There are also affirmations that you will make strides to improve relationships. There is nothing wrong with taking steps to improve your health. However, if a person does not start eating right on January 1st or takes a day or two off from exercising a week or two in, the reaction is: I FAILED. If you get into an argument with a family member, you are racked with guilt. You think to yourself that you are a terrible person. This is why I do not like resolutions made for the new year.

I have said it many times before, failure is part of life. It is a key component of your life's journey. Failure helps you learn what not to do in the future. I want to address improving relationships first because I think having a good circle of support is essential to well-being. Life is stressful; we all try our best but sometimes we just cannot control our temper. Add in the holidays, and you have additional pressure. Thinking that it is going to be like a Hallmark movie makes it worse. If you say something offensive, or you overreact, you are human. Next time, stop yourself after your gaff and apologize. It goes a long way. It is also a good idea to learn how to deal with stress. I want to share a marvelous piece by Patrick Young that offers some invaluable information. I am sure he would appreciate feedback so here is where you can reach him: ableusa.info

Now let us take the person who does not start eating healthier on day one. What was going on that day? Was there a family gathering? Did someone invite you to a football party? The mistake was made in choosing to start when there was an event that would be full of tempting, if not the healthiest food. These things happen. In a case like this, shrug it off and start the next day. Plus, do not make it an all-or-nothing proposition. Ask yourself what is healthy eating? Maybe you start with breakfast. Instead of a bagel or sugary cereal, maybe try these suggestions:

  • plain yogurt with fresh fruit,

  • a low-calorie smoothie,

  • or, if you have time, make eggs.

If you find you are taking days off from exercising, consider that you might have started out too hard. Your body might just need a break. It is a common mistake. You are gung-ho about getting started, yet it might be years since you did such vigorous activity. Pull back, taking into account your current fitness level. Listen to your body; it is trying to keep you from getting injured.

Start slow, assess weekly gains, and before you know it, you will be on your way to a fit and healthy body. Be mindful of what you are going to say before you open your mouth. It gets easier as you go along. I have been known to speak before thinking and it can get you into trouble. Learn to take a breath when you find yourself getting angry. You will be happy you did.

Finally, a reminder. I am here to support you on your journey; do not hesitate to reach out. If you would like to work with me, but do not know how to get started, give me a call or text at 845-705-8288 or shoot me an email at llalicata@resolvedself.com

Until next time, don't forget to be resolved

XOXO
